#PitchWars Bio 2016

FullSizeRenderPitch Wars Mentee Bio. For those of you wondering, Pitch Wars is an annual contest where writers submit their manuscripts and if selected get the honor of another author helping them make that manuscript the best it can be. Afterward, agents choose the stories they may want to represent from the finalist list. Hopefully, mine will be on it!

This is my first PitchWars and I’m submitting my adult mystery, SECRETS BELOW. If you are a fan of Tana French, this book transforms the Dublin Murder Squad into an FBI Dive Team investigating crimes in the waterways of the Pacific Northwest. I’ve had so much fun researching this novel. My career as a 911 Operator opened the door to the unique opportunity to attend a class specializing in Aquatic Death and Homicidal Drowning Investigations. This class rounded out my knowledge of how underwater crime scenes should be investigated and the techniques learned were key to creating this manuscript.

IMG_0047About me:  My career as a 911 Operator began over 18 years ago. I look at that number and can’t believe how fast it has gone! I’m blessed with an amazing employer and the best co-workers a girl could have. I’ve dabbled with writing on and off over the years and their support has been vital in pushing me to take the steps necessary to get published and write professionally. The job has exposed me to many facets of the human experience not available to those outside of emergency services. It’s those experiences I use to infuse my characters with real emotion and behaviors. The job also provides direct access to experts in all levels of public safety. I’m still in awe how so many have been ready and willing to answer my questions and help me make my writing as accurate as possible. They are all amazing!

I’m also a PADI certified Advanced Scuba Diver. I dive in both warm and cold environments. My love of the water partnered with my career is what inspired my current manuscript. I’ve searched high and low for great scuba diving mysteries and was coming up short. That’s when I realized I needed to create one. I’ve had so much fun writing it, I can’t believe the idea didn’t come to me sooner.

My spare time is spent traveling the globe. I try to visit a new destination at least once a year. This year was an Eastern Caribbean Cruise. I’m traveling to Scotland and attending the Edinburgh Book Festival in August. Finally, I hope to make it to St. Croix in December if my schedule and finances allow. If not, I’ll slate it for my 2017 travel destination. Not only do I enjoy diving when I travel but getting to meet new people and explore their culture. Those connections are the best part of my trips and I have friends all over the world.

My son is turning twenty-six this month and I’ve been in a long-term relationship with a great guy for the last four years. As I became more serious about my writing, my standards for housework have suffered. Good thing my boyfriend steps up whenever I need him to and supports me while I chase my dreams. I’m a lucky girl.

Favorite Books: My reading obsession began with the first book to make me cry, A SUMMER TO DIE by Lois Lowry. That book was quickly followed by WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS by Norman Tokar. With those two books, reading became my vice of choice and one I’ve never given up. I’m not the type who gets boxed into a genre and stays there. If it is a good story, I will read it. My mood often dictates the type of book I pick up. Sometimes, I’m stressed and need a light read that transports me (OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon, CLEOPATRA by Margaret George). Other times, I’m ready to dive into a thriller (GONE GIRL by Gillian Flynn, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO by Steig Larsson, THE FOURTH PROCEDURE by John Stanley Pottinger) that makes me forget about everything else. Then, there are moments when I need a good cry and pull out the heartbreakers (ME BEFORE YOU by Jojo Moyes, THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE by Audrey Niffenegger). In the end, I know I’ll never go wrong with a good mystery, regardless of my mood and my favorite authors never disappoint (Tana French, Lee Child, Dean Koontz, Sue Grafton, John Grisham, Charlaine Harris . . . I could go on forever here but you get the idea).

Ten random things about me:

  1. World Explorer. I love to travel and want to see everything. I’m always planning my next trip to a new location.
  2. Certified scuba diver. Since 71% of Earth’s surface is water, I need to be ready to see it all.
  3. I’m always early. If I show up on time, that means I’m late. I often sit in my car and wait until five minutes before the scheduled time so I’m not too embarrassed.
  4. Dog person. ALL THE WAY. Seriously, how can you resist this face?IMG_0042
  5. Daydreamer. I still remember the first time the world slipped away and thoughts of butterflies danced in my head while I should have been paying attention (first-grade class if you really wanted to know).
  6. Meat eater. My two favorites: Ribeye Steak, King Crab Legs.
  7. Still searching for a way to eat all the good food and not have to exercise (failing at this).
  8. Trying to accept that I HAVE TO EXCERCISE almost every day. (see number 7).
  9. Shoe obsessed. Unfortunately, EXERCISE hurt my foot and I’ve had to get rid of all the cute shoes I once owned and replace them with Orthotic shoes. I’m still searching for cute ones that are good for your feet. Send me suggestions!
  10. Constantly amazed at this thing called life and everything it brings.

  1. I’ve read some Tana French. I am a cat person but I don’t mind dogs and have had dogs but I much prefer cats. Good luck in Pitchwars! Your job sounds like you’d have a ton of knowledge about how First Responders operate. Great writing fodder!

    1. I don’t know, I just read your bio and zookeeper tops 911 operator any day! Although, I’m beginning to see some similarities. Thanks for stopping by my blog and good luck to you too!

  2. Love that puppy pic! Cannot resist that face!
Your books sounds fascinating. I love mystery and suspense. Good luck in PitchWars!

  3. Love your bio! It’s fun to put things you have a passion for in a MS. (I have a YA MS with mine-violin playing.) Best of luck in Pitch Wars!
